Thinking about starting your sewing journey, but overwhelmed by complicated machines? The Brother XR3774 might just be your perfect match.

Designed with simplicity, versatility, and affordability in mind, this sewing machine offers just enough features to help beginners feel confident, without unnecessary frills.

In this blog, we will explore what makes the Brother XR3774 such a popular choice, its key features, pros and cons, and how it compares to similar models.

What Is the Brother XR3774?

🛒 View Price on Amazon

Okay, so what exactly is the Brother XR3774? Well, in my opinion, it’s a solid, no-frills sewing machine that’s perfect for beginners or anyone who wants a reliable machine without breaking the bank. It’s a non-computerized model, which means you won’t find a fancy LCD screen or a million options, but that’s part of its charm. It’s straightforward to use.

It features 37 built-in stitches,  with an automatic buttonhole stitch. And it’s got a lot of sewing accessories, too: 8 types of presser feet,  which you can use for everything from making your own clothes to crafting “an entire ranch worth of critters,” according to the company. I feel like it’s a good choice if you’re just now getting into bondage and want something that’s not so intimidating.

It’s also lightweight and portable, making it the perfect table to bring to classes or sewing circles. It’s got a ton of value for a no frills machine.

Key Features of Brother XR3774

I think one of the best things about the Brother XR3774 is how many features it packs in for the price. It’s not a super fancy, computerized machine, but it gets the job done. Let’s take a closer look at some of the things that make it stand out.

  • Built in Stitches
  • Automatic Needle Threader
  • Wide Table
  • Versatile Presser Feet
  • LED Lighting

Built-in Stitches

One of the first things I noticed was all of the stitches! The XR3774 Brother sewing machine has 37 stitches that are built in; this is actually how many you get for such a reasonably-priced machine. It does all the regular stuff — and by that, I mean straight stitches and zigzags — but also has some decorative options, nay, even an automatic buttonhole stitch. That makes it really versatile for a variety of projects.

Automatic Needle Threader

Fine, I’ll say it: I’m terrible at putting a thread through the eye of a needle. So, an automatic needle threader is a lifesaver. I get so much time and aggravation back, particularly when I’m working on a project that involves constant thread swapping. It’s a small thing, but it makes all the difference in sewing for me.

Wide Table

The bonus wide table included is an Ut must have for larger projects like quilts. It gives me more space while I support the fabric better, manoeuvre easier, and without stretching or pulling on the fabric. I do not know what I would do without it when working on a large quilt.

Versatile Presser Feet

The XR3774 also includes a pack of 8 presser feet, which is nice since I won’t need to shell out extra money for additional accessories right off the bat. There’s a buttonhole foot, a zipper foot, an overlock seam guide, and several others that are helpful for specific techniques. It’s nice to have options!

LED Lighting

Good lighting is critical for sewing, and the XR3774 comes with a built-in LED light that does an excellent job of casting light on your work. It helps me to be able to clearly see the fabric,  whether I’m working in a shadowy room or simply sewing a darker fabric. And the LED lights don’t overheat, so I can whip those bad boys out without fear of burning my fingers.

Ease of Use

I find the Brother XR3774 to be a relatively user-friendly machine in general, even for those new to sewing. The controls are responsive, and the unit itself is quite light and portable. I also love the manual that this pen brought. It’s simple to use.

The machine is an excellent one for beginners, or even intermediate sewers who require a reliable and budget-friendly choice. The XR3774 sewing machine is easy to use.

Pros and Cons of Brother XR3774

Pros of Brother XR3774

When I consider the Brother XR3774 pros and cons, I find a lot to appreciate, but it’s not without its drawbacks. It’s a solid machine for beginners, but more experienced sewers might find it limiting. Let’s break it down.

  • I’ve found that the Brother XR3774 offers a lot for its price point.
  • It’s lightweight and easy to set up, which is great for beginners.
  • The variety of stitches is decent.
  • The automatic needle threader is a lifesaver.
Cons of Brother XR3774
  • However, the machine can be a bit noisy, and the plastic construction doesn’t inspire confidence in its long-term durability.li>
  • The XR3774 sewing machine isn’t very quiet, a common issue with more affordable machines.

Brother XR3774 vs. Singer Heavy Duty 4452

Whenever I look for a sewing machine that’s not going to break the bank, my research includes both Singer and Brother. The Brother XR3774 is a machine recommended by many as one of the best sewing machines for beginners, but how does it compare to something like the Singer Heavy Duty 4452? Let’s break it down.

The Singer 4452 is all about power and speed, capable of tackling the thicker fabrics with ease. The XR3774, while adaptable, is more targeted toward general sewing and lighter projects. The only difference is that for time marches, the purpose and their construction are different.

The Singer has a more powerful motor and a metal frame, whereas the Brother is lighter weight and very portable, which makes it ideal for taking to classes or sewing on the go.

They’re both good sewing machines, but they serve different purposes. If you’re sewing a lot of denim, canvas, or a few layers at once, the Singer 4452 may be better for you. But if you’re a novice or work predominantly with the lighter fabrics, Brother XR3774 features are more than enough to handle it and make your task easy.

Brother XR3774 vs. Brother CS6000i

brother-6000i-1.jpg

When I’m choosing between 2 sewing machines, then I get into the details. Both the Brother XR3774 and the Brother CS6000i are two popular models, especially for those new to sewing or beginners, but some differences between these two machines that could make one a better match for you than the other. Let’s break it down.

The main thing that sets them apart, at least to me, is that the CS6000i is a computerized machine and the XR3774 is not. That is to say that the CS6000i features a digital display and is more automated.

Another factor to take into account is the count of stitches. The CS6000i has 60 built-in stitches, including decorative stitches and 7 styles of one step buttonholes. Where the XR3774 only provides one buttonhole style and 37 stitches. You might be able to make do with 37 stitches for basic sewing, but if you want a little more creativity, the CS6000i has the upper hand. The best Brother sewing machine for beginners, I believe, is a good pick!

Here’s a quick comparison table:

Feature Brother XR3774 Brother CS6000i
Computerized No Yes
Built-in Stitches 37 60
Buttonhole Styles 1 8

Price is also a factor. The XR3774 typically has a lower price than the CS6000i. For budgeters, the XR3774 is a good pick. But if you are happy to shell out a bit more for the added features and functionality, the CS6000i is an investment worth considering.

At the end of the day, the best machine is one that suits your wants and needs — affordably. If you are new to sewing and are in the market for a basic, dependable model — or if you need a second machine that won’t break the bank — then we recommend the XR3774. If you are looking for more features and can afford to spend a little more, the CS6000i is the right choice.

Now,  now you’ve heard all about the Brother XR3774—its features and how it compares to other machines. Now, let’s see if it’s a good fit for you. I believe this machine is ideal for a certain type of sewer.

Experienced sewers may like it as a back-up, travel sewing machine. If you go to sewing bees or classes, its reliability and portability are a bonus. It’s also a great choice for teaching children to sew. The automatic needle threader and straightforward controls make it less frustrating for beginners.

In Summary The Brother XR3774 is ideal for beginners and those looking for a cheap, no frills machine. It’s not the most high-tech device out there, but it does what needs to be done without loading you down with bells and whistles.
